Look + Listen: Spring 2023

These days it regularly seems like the world has gone mad. So what do we do when we're feeling confused, discombobulated, despondent, elated, and all those other feels we all have right now? Let's discuss.

Music. Music is life.

Kali Uchis, Red Moon in Venus. This is true luscious, sultry, sexy music. Also, if you get a chance to listen to an interview with Kali, do it. Her earnestness will make you fall in love.

Bahamas, Lost in the Light. This has been playing on a loop lately. Somehow uplifting and relaxing at once.

Fleetwood Mac, Silver Springs. Hard to get tired of this song.

Podcasts. We are podcast junkies. On a walk, in the car, putting away the groceries. Wait, does this mean we're not comfortable with silence?

Pivot, Silicon Valley Bank's Downfall. This is one of the best, and easiest to understand, overviews of what happened that we heard.

Beyond Capital Podcast, Jessie Gabriel: All Places. It was such a pleasure to speak with Eva and Ed about running your own business, the capital equity gap, and really important things like electrolytes.

Hysteria, hosted by commentator Erin Ryan and former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Alyssa Mastromonaco. Erin and Alyssa have an uncanny ability to break down the (usually horrible) news of the week and keep you laughing at the same time.

Slow Burn. Each season of this podcast is a deep dive into historical events, most recently Roe v. Wade. The next season is on the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings and comes out in May.

Reading. When we're not reading your documents, this is what we open up.

When Women Lead by Julia Boorstin. This isn't just another ra ra, women are awesome book. What we love about Julia is she is purely data driven. And, yes, the data indicate that women are awesome.

Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed. This book came out over 10 years ago, but we always return to this beautiful collection of advice columns by Cheryl Strayed. Highly recommend.

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel. We haven’t had a chance to read this one yet but have loved the escapism of her previous books.

Watching. We are not at all, zero percent, above collapsing on the couch and into a streaming coma.

Vanderpump Rules (Peacock). The year of the Scandoval. While we're enjoying the episodes leading up to it, we're really in this for the (hopefully ten-part) reunion.

Outlast (Netflix). This is a truly awful reality show, produced by Jason Bateman, about wilderness survival in Alaska and people being a**holes. The scenery is incredible and the characters are oh so easy to hate.

*Note: the two suggestions above (trash) were Jessie's. Molly has much more sophisticated taste.

Be My Guest with Ina Garten (Discovery+). Ina invites friends over for cocktails, food, and conversation. We will watch anything with the Barefoot Contessa, but this show has to be our favorite.

Daisy Jones & the Six (Hulu). This was a really fun book by Taylor Jenkins Reid that has been adapted for a series on Hulu.
